De Wageningen Universiteit doet een nieuw onderzoek naar de effecten van wifi-straling op bomen. Het eerste onderzoek naar de zieke bomen in Alphen aan den Rijn leverde nog niet voldoende data op.

Een aantal bomen in de gemeente Alphen aan den Rijn vertoonden enkele jaren terug opmerkelijke afwijkingen in groei, waarbij er tevens scheuren in de bast ontstonden en bloedingen. Sommige bomen vertoonden gezwelachtige bastknobbels. Experts konden geen oorzaak vinden. Er was geen sprake van een virus of bacterie.

Ambtenaar Niek van 't Woud van de gemeente Alphen aan den Rijn verdiepte zich in de zaak en kwam op de suggestie dat de boomziekte te maken zou kunnen hebben met elektromagnetische straling zoals die van wifi accespoints. Wageningen Universiteit kreeg opdracht van de gemeente Alphen aan den Rijn om te onderzoeken in hoeverre het toenemend aantal bronnen van elektromagnetische straling, zoals zendmasten, een rol zou kunnen spelen bij de verslechterde gezondheid van de bomen.

A tiny revolutionary electric fold-up car designed in Spain's Basque country as the answer to urban stress and pollution is to be unveiled next week before hitting Europe's cities in 2013.

The "Hiriko", the Basque word for "urban", is a two-seater whose motor is located in the wheels and which folds up like a child's collapsible buggy, or stroller, for easy parking.

Dreamt up by Boston's MIT-Media lab, the concept was developed by a consortium of seven small Basque firms under the name Hiriko Driving Mobility, with a first prototype to be unveiled next Tuesday to European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso.

Researchers have succeeded in combining the power of quantum computing with the security of quantum cryptography and have shown that perfectly secure cloud computing can be achieved using the principles of quantum mechanics. They have performed an experimental demonstration of quantum computation in which the input, the data processing, and the output remain unknown to the quantum computer. The international team of scientists will publish the results of the experiment, carried out at the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) at the University of Vienna and the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI), in the forthcoming issue of Science.

Quantum computers are expected to play an important role in future information processing since they can outperform classical computers at many tasks. Considering the challenges inherent in building quantum devices, it is conceivable that future quantum computing capabilities will exist only in a few specialized facilities around the world – much like today's supercomputers. Users would then interact with those specialized facilities in order to outsource their quantum computations. The scenario follows the current trend of cloud computing: central remote servers are used to store and process data – everything is done in the "cloud." The obvious challenge is to make globalized computing safe and ensure that users' data stays private.

The first systematic power profiles of microprocessors could help lower the energy consumption of both small cell phones and giant data centers, report computer science professors from The University of Texas at Austin and the Australian National University.

Their results may point the way to how companies like Google, Apple, Intel and Microsoft can make software and hardware that will lower the energy costs of very small and very large devices.

De prijs van bestaande koopwoningen is in december met gemiddeld 4 procent gedaald ten opzichte van dezelfde maand in 2010.

Het prijsniveau van verkochte woningen is daarmee op het laagste punt beland in meer dan zes jaar, zo blijkt uit vrijdag gepubliceerde cijfers van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) en het Kadaster.

De prijsdaling was een stuk groter dan in november toen de prijs van koopwoningen gemiddeld met 3,3 procent daalde. Alle woningen waren in december goedkoper dan in 2010. Appartementen namen met 4,8 procent het meest af in prijs, tussenwoningen met 3,1 procent het minst.
